It's Caturday!

BOULDER, Colo. (10/22/2010) -- Boulder firefighters saved the life of a lucky cat Wednesday by using a special oxygen mask that the department received as a donation. Firefighters said they found the cat home alone inside a burning condo at the Gold Run complex on Sundown Lane. The cat was rescued, then resuscitated using a pet CPR mask, firefighters said. The cat was taken to the Humane Society for more treatment.

The masks were donated to the Boulder Fire Rescue Department in 2008 by two girls who sold jewelry to raise the money for the specialized animal equipment. Clara Grainger and Isabel Lippincott told 7NEWS in 2008 that they bought 15 masks. One week after the masks were donated, firefighters said they used a pet oxygen mask to revive a dog rescued from a house fire.

Damage to the condo Wednesday is estimated at $50,000. Fire Marshal David Lowrey said the fire appears to be accidental in nature, but that the cat-mask made the difference for the family pet.

Peter needs a home

Peter is a young cat -  a neutered, 'black-tie' male who has been with a foster parent since June 2009.  He's kind of a shy cat, but that doesn't make him a bad cat.  In fact, he's well behaved and likes to be petted.  His name is Peter and he needs a home!  At the time of this writing, he is with:   East Contra Costa County Homeless Animals' Lifeline Organization (H.A.L.O.)  -  P.O. Box 2011, Antioch, Ca. 94531 - Email: contacthalo@yahoo.com

But if you don't happen to live near Antioch, CA, there are plenty of shelters that have good cats like Peter.  Please think of them first when considering a new pet and always, Always, ALWAYS spay and neuter your cats!

How can I stop the cat wars?

Cats fighting and biting each other is something that's bound to happen in multi-cat households.  Every cat has a different personality, but they are all pretty possessive and territorial - especially when it comes to food and affection.  Some young cats (kittens in particular) are natural pests and some are just mean.  Of course, older cats tend like their routines and to be left alone.  But if you've got two or more cats that are always 'going at each other', one of them will probably be the aggressor, more often than not.

So the best thing to do is make special provisions for the victim cat.  Of course, you love them both and so everyone will have to live together.  But sometimes, you'll have to set things up so that they're kept apart as much as possible, at feeding time in particular.  You want separate sleeping arrangements, separate food bowls... separate everything.

Also, make sure that there's always plenty of food available since the cat battles will usually begin near meal time.  If they don't have any food to bite down on, they'll start biting each other!

Nobody knows why Bangladesh tigers are so 'small'

Sunderbans foest tigers are generally being found to weigh nearly half as much as their larger cousins in this part of the world. Tigers dwelling in the famous mangrove forests of Bangladesh are nearly half the weight of other wild Bengal tigers in South Asia, a new study has found.  U.S. researchers document an average weight of female tigers in the Sundarbans forests was 76.7kg (170lb), according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service research.  But other wild Bengal tigers in the region tipped the scales at 138.2 kg on average.

Researchers said this could be because Sundarbans tigers ate smaller deer.  The team believes the big cats found in the mangrove forest, which stretches from Bangladesh to India, could be among the world's smallest tigers.  They belong to one of nine sub-species of Bengal tiger in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
Smaller dinner.Researchers from the University of Minnesota and the Bangladesh Forest Department - who carried out the study for the US Fish and Wildlife Service - weighed three Sundarbans tigers.  Two of the animals were captured and sedated, but (sadly) the other one had been killed by villagers.

Adam Barlow, one of the authors of the research, said they do not know why the Sundarbans tigers are so small.  "This could be related to the small size of deer available to tigers in the Sundarbans, compared to the larger deer and other prey available to tigers in other parts," he said.  It is estimated that between 300 and 500 Bengal tigers live in the Bangladesh side of the Sundarbans alone.  They are isolated from the next tiger population by a distance of up to 300km (190 miles).

Tigers are an endangered species, and so it is especially tragic when they are killed for sport or to farm their habitat. There are only about 3,500 left in the wild worldwide - less than one third of them breeding females.

What are the best cat toys?

Many new cat 'owners' wonder about toy selections for their furry friends, especially kittens.  Typically, a young cat can (and will) have fun with things that you wouldn't expect, such as an empty paper bag or just a wadded up piece of paper.  And though cats actually are equipped to see certain colors, a toy's color really doesn't interest your cat.  In order to get their attention, patterns and contrast with the floor make more of a difference.

Of course, most of this applies to kittens and young cats in general.  Older felines will rarely have any interest in batting the kitten toy around.  Naturally, there are exceptions to that and a little 'nip rubbed onto the toy seems to please just about any cat.  But overall, cats will get bored real fast with any toy.

Just remember that it's your love and attention they want more than anything else.  The toy is going to be a lot more fun (for you and your cat) if you are part of the game!

Your cat CAN talk!

Cats speak to you in about a million ways. This communication with the tail, for example, is a feline's emotional barometer.  A slow, even tale-wave expresses contentment. A faster pace can mean displeasure, excitement or getting ready or 'game time'.  Of course, we all know when the cat is about to pounce or when to keep your hand away.  Obvious signs of affection are also unmistakable.  But did you know that a cat's tale, when held high & perhaps quivering, is a friendly greeting?  Cat-rubbing expresses more than just "hello." It can also mean "You belong to me." Scent glands on the forehead, lips and chin are used to mark territory and possessions. Cats will also head butt, entwine around legs, lick or rub their mouths on their humans. In multi-cat households, marking can become a very competitive activity. Since some felines add drool to the mix, it can also be sloppy.

Of course, the way a cat hold its ears usually means something.  But when a cat's afraid, its eyes become enormous.  And a sick cat's whole demeanor may change. Although felines are notoriously stoic, extreme discomfort can be noticeable. If it has an ear infection or other ailment, the cat might shake its head and dig at or flatten the offending ear.  But overall, sick cats sort of close down.  They might curl up in an abnormal way, not like they're just sleeping.

And what about that 'bread-kneading' action?  You've seen it. Front paws alternately pump away on some soft object (like you) until the kneader dozes off or gets distracted. This activity begins in kittenhood when baby's paws busily stimulate mom's milk flow. Be honored if your thigh reminds kitty of mother's love.  It means that your cat loves you and her home!  But cats will actually 'tell you' they love you too.  Purring indicates happiness and satisfaction, or stress. If a purr can be compared to our laughter, a stress purr is a nervous laugh. Even sick (or dying) cats purr, perhaps to self-soothe. Anyone who's fed a feline knows the sounds: "Chirp, birrr, jibber-jabber, meow, brrow." Whether it's a command to speed up the can opener or an expression of delight and gratitude, it's definitely meaningful discourse. Watch the tail – it's probably straight up.  More talk – "Squirrel, squirrel!" The tail is probably switching and teeth chattering. This oral excitement mimics chewing on prey. It's sort of a dress rehearsal for the act of hunting and catching. Perhaps fluids in the mouth are thus stimulated for the kill.

And, of course, cats say volumes by staring. A lengthy, annoyed gaze at you mesmerized by television or the Internet works well enough to use the tactic often. "Hey you, pet me! Uh, I'm hungry! Hola, I'm numero uno!"  Staring at the door says kitty wants out. Or Mr. Watchcat might be indicating an immediate need for firearms: "Alert! Intruder, front door!" Now, the trespasser might just be an errant moth hugging the porch light, but it could be a real cat burglar. Watch and learn (and maybe dial 911).

An upside-down cat trusts the person it plops over for. It sometimes offers an invitation to play. Rolling around, grinding its seemingly disconnected spine into the carpet says it all: "Oh bliss, joy. Wuv-ooo!"
So, where can you read a cat? No, not in a catalog – in your own home where your own cat has lots to tell you.
